What is most important when looking for gluten-free food? The number of restaurants in an app or on a website? The number of locations marked on a map? Or, above all, that the information is accurate, relevant, and reliable?
For people with coeliac disease, this is not merely a matter of convenience. Finding a suitable restaurant, bakery, or grocery shop requires dependable information. A business offering gluten-free options is not necessarily suitable for someone with coeliac disease.
That is precisely why we created Gluten-Free Hub EU – and why we do things differently.
Quality, not quantity
Numerous websites and apps cover gluten-free options across dozens of countries, listing thousands of restaurants, cafés, shops, and other businesses.
However, bigger does not necessarily mean better. Maintaining accurate and up-to-date information for thousands of locations is challenging. Details can quickly become outdated when businesses change ownership, update their menus, or alter their food preparation processes. Information scraped or aggregated from other sources can often be incomplete, obsolete, or even misleading.
A restaurant may offer gluten-free dishes without properly managing the risk of cross-contamination. Nevertheless, an outdated listing can linger online, giving users a false sense of security.
A long directory of venues is only as useful as the reliability of the information it contains.
That is why we focused on a single country: Slovenia.
Rather than attempting to map every gluten-free venue across Europe, we are building a reliable and carefully maintained resource for anyone living in or visiting Slovenia.
We work directly with the featured restaurants, cafés, bakeries, shops, and other businesses. We maintain regular contact with them, and we have personally visited the vast majority. Our information is built on direct communication, genuine relationships, and firsthand experience, not simply copied from third-party websites.
More than a directory
With our interactive map, you can discover where to eat and shop, whether you are planning a holiday or exploring a new area. But Gluten-Free Hub EU offers far more than just a map and a list of venues. We have also prepared practical guides on food labelling, gluten-free claims, and day-to-day gluten-free living.
There is also Celiadelia, our multilingual AI assistant for gluten-free living. Available in Slovenian, English, and German, she helps users find useful information and answers to their questions.
Working directly with venues enables us to offer even more. We organise giveaways, share recipes, spotlight new products and businesses, and publish other helpful, engaging content.
Gluten-free means more than just an item on a menu
For people with coeliac disease, a gluten-free diet is a medical necessity, not a lifestyle trend. Our community also warmly welcomes anyone else following a gluten-free diet.
However, offering gluten-free options does not automatically mean a venue is safe for people with coeliac disease.
A gluten-free item on a menu does not in itself guarantee that the risk of cross-contamination is properly managed. What matters is the composition of the dish, the sourcing of ingredients, food preparation and storage, kitchen workflows, and staff awareness.
We encourage open dialogue, asking the right questions, and making decisions based on reliable information. Because kitchen procedures and circumstances can change over time, ongoing contact with venues is essential.
No artificially generated listings masquerading as verified data. Real people, real venues, real relationships.
Artificial intelligence is increasingly used to generate content and populate massive directories. However, automatically creating a listing does not verify whether a business actually exists, whether it still offers gluten-free food, or whether it understands the needs of people with coeliac disease.
A polished description or a pin on a map is no guarantee of accuracy. Information gathered from other websites cannot replace a direct conversation with the people running the business.
Behind Gluten-Free Hub EU are real people who live with coeliac disease ourselves and invest our time into building and sustaining relationships with businesses. This human-led approach allows us to look beyond names and addresses, creating a resource of genuine value.
A community, not just a website
A directory provides information. A community provides a sense of belonging.
Living gluten-free can be challenging, especially following a coeliac disease diagnosis. One has to learn how to read food labels, ask the right questions, and evaluate whether a restaurant is safe for gluten-free dining.
Gluten-Free Hub EU brings together practical information, people, and businesses to help make everyday gluten-free living easier.
At the same time, it enables businesses to reach people actively looking for their products and services, fostering a better understanding of the realities and standards of gluten-free dining.
Why Slovenia?
Covering an area properly requires time, dedication, and local knowledge. Slovenia may be a small country, but it boasts a remarkable number of dedicated gluten-free producers, independent bakeries, restaurants, and shops.
By focusing on Slovenia, we can provide locally relevant, detailed information on specialist products, safe places to eat and shop, and other key aspects of gluten-free living.
For locals, Gluten-Free Hub EU makes everyday life easier; for visitors, it helps them plan their trips with confidence; and for businesses, it provides a direct connection with an audience actively seeking their offerings.
We do not try to be everything to everyone everywhere. Our objective is clear: to focus on a region we know intimately and provide high-quality, genuinely useful content.
